    Product Description

Australia produces nearly half of the world's garnet, with the rest coming mainly from India, the United States and China. In the late 1970s, large quantities of garnet sand were discovered at Port Gregory in western Australia. Subsequently, the largest garnet mine opened there in 1983 and is currently the largest industrial garnet producer in Australia and arguably the largest garnet producer in the world. Garnet from the deposit was transported to the site by streams and rivers from nearby very old (Archaean) garnet-rich metamorphic rocks.

Since the 1880s, garnet has also been extracted from Broken Hill in New South Wales (see Google Arts and Culture) and the Hart Ranges in the Northern Territory as a by-product of mining other minerals from metamorphic rocks. The Thackaringa area near Broken Hill has a large amount of garnet-bearing metamorphic rock, and mines have been operating there on and off since the 1960s. Common in these deposits is a type of garnet called almandine. It is very important for industrial uses such as abrasives. In addition, yellow, orange and brown garnets have been mined in the Harts Ranges near Alice Springs since 2016.

Other significant garnet deposits in Australia are associated with volcanic or metamorphic rocks in Queensland and New South Wales. In Queensland, the Garnet Hills have red and green garnet deposits. Gem-grade garnets have been found near Proston, Mount Tarampa and Mount Wyangapinni, but these are largely commercial fossil sites rather than mining operations. Garnet can also be found from Bathurst to Orange in New South Wales.
